At HEXO, we believe that true leadership is about more than creating innovative brands and becoming a market-leading cannabis company. To that end, we are proud to say that we are officially carbon neutral, having offset 100% of our 2020 operational carbon emissions in addition to the personal emissions of our 1,200 employees*. Learn more about our ESG actions.

Properties of cannabis
General
Although humans have consumed cannabis for millennia, its active compounds have only recently been the subject of serious scientific inquiry. There are more than 500 components in cannabis, 100 of which are active cannabinoids. These are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s existing endocannabinoid system in impacting the release of neurotransmitters. Linking the brain to the body, this system affects both the central nervous system and peripheral processes that impact things like pain, pleasure, immune function, thermoregulation, mood, appetite, anxiety, stress, pain and inflammation.
THC and CBD
The best-known and most widely studied cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC was first isolated in the mid-1960s, but how it worked and which receptors it worked on were identified only two decades later. THC has a noted psychoactive effect; CBD is used for its non-impairing qualities that do not result in a ‘high’. Although they naturally occur together, they can be isolated in order to fully utilize their particular qualities.
Cannabis Legislation
Cannabis Act (S.C. 2018, c. 16)
Under the Cannabis Act, Canada’s federal government legalized adult-use cannabis on October 17, 2018. Access to cannabis for medical purposes remains in effect under the Act. For more information, please click here.
