Learn about cannabis

What is Cannabis?

Cannabis is the term commonly used for the plant or flower of the Cannabaceae family. It’s been consumed by humans for longer than we’ve written stuff down.

Sativa and Indica

There are two main types of cannabis for human use: Sativa and Indica. Each has a different shape, size, leaf and effect. Crossed with each other, they make hybrids. Indica is generally considered to provide a calming and relaxing effect. Sativa can have more energizing, uplifting and cerebral effects.

Hybrids

And those hybrids? Somewhere between the two, with a dominant effect from one of the two parent plants.

THC and CBD

The active compounds in cannabis are cannabinoids. Cannabis has more than 100 of them, of which THC and CBD are the most common.

Odour

Ever noticed the distinct smell of cannabis? You can thank terpenes for that. They’re volatile aromatic compounds in the essential oil of plants, including cannabis.

Trichomes

Terpenes and cannabinoids like THC and CBD are both contained in trichomes, tiny and sticky hairs on the cannabis flower.

  • Properties of cannabis
    General
Although humans have consumed cannabis for millennia, its active compounds have only recently been the subject of serious scientific inquiry. There are more than 500 components in cannabis, 100 of which are active cannabinoids. These are chemical compounds that interact with the body’s existing endocannabinoid system in impacting the release of neurotransmitters. Linking the brain to the body, this system affects both the central nervous system and peripheral processes that impact things like pain, pleasure, immune function, thermoregulation, mood, appetite, anxiety, stress, pain and inflammation.
    THC and CBD
The best-known and most widely studied cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC was first isolated in the mid-1960s, but how it worked and which receptors it worked on were identified only two decades later. THC has a noted psychoactive effect; CBD is used for its non-impairing qualities that do not result in a ‘high’. Although they naturally occur together, they can be isolated in order to fully utilize their particular qualities.
    Cannabis Legislation
    Cannabis Act (S.C. 2018, c. 16)
Under the Cannabis Act, Canada’s federal government legalized adult-use cannabis on October 17, 2018. Access to cannabis for medical purposes remains in effect under the Act. For more information, please click here.
    Health and Safety
    For parents
Like all narcotics and intoxicants, cannabis must be treated with care and consumed responsibly. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Parents wishing to learn more about cannabis should visit here.
